Farm Activities include: Fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting (bring own shotguns), raptor viewing and informational talks, and a boulle pit at the Lodge. For the kids, there is a loft with table tennis table, soccer table, games and TV. Another loft hosts a pool table.
GAME FARM : HCE is a registered conservancy with a breeding programme involving Blesbuck, Wildebeest, Zebra and Springbuck (and a lone ostrich who thinks he is a Zebra). The game can be viewed whilst driving or walking on the farm. Walking after dark is not recommended. Strictly no hunting is permitted on the farm. No removal of any flora or fauna is permitted from the farm.
TROUT FISHING : The stocked dam is a 1km – 30 minute hike from the Lodge and is only suitable for the more adventurous and advanced fisherman. (Weeds and difficult terrain make catching the 2kg trout in the dam a serious undertaking.) More friendly dams in Belfast are available and day fishing licenses and hiring of fishing equipment can be arranged by the farm manager on request.
SHOOTING RANGE : Clay pigeon shooting is available on the farm at an hourly rate. Guests need to bring their own licensed firearms to participate. Strict indemnities are required and no children under 18 are permitted on the range.
HIKING/WALKING: HCE is ideal for hiking and walking and historical settlement sites can be found. Please ask the farm manager for more details.
AVIARY : In partnership with the Dullstroom Bird of Prey Center, HCE has an aviary for the rehabilitation of birds of prey. This is a short 5 minute walk from the Lodge. Serving as primarily a release aviary, we have to date released 14 spotted eagle owls back into the wild – one of which was born in the aviary! 6 owls are full time residents of the aviary because of various injuries and are great to visit and photograph. Please do not frighten or feed the birds.
VEHICLES : A 4X4 is required should you wish to drive around the property although an ordinary vehicle will get you comfortably from the gate to the Lodge parking.
